Style & Substance.

I've been a little bit crazy watching stylelikeu videos over the weekend, so I came up with the idea of doing a little video interview with my good friend Laura, who some of you might remember from my photo shoot late last year. So many people commented to express their love, so I couldn't wait to feature her again, somehow. We are both fairly lazy, so an express video at uni seemed like a good compromise. Of course I didn't get to encompass her amazing style but hey, a movie picture is better then no pictures at all.

edit: I see people are quite confused about my heels question. If you noticed, it was the only specific question I asked, which was asked for a reason. I've worn heels to uni, I've had massive glares and nasty comments, and as me and Laura have different views on shoes to wear to uni. Hope that clears it up. I know from personal experience that its a sensitive issue, but I think it's a little bit sad that people want to take up the race debate, personally.

  1. dont appreciate your pretentious friend's racist comment about 'a certain type of person's shoes'. won't be reading your blog again.

  3. WOW SOME OF YOUR READERS NEED TO GROW UP. I LOVED THE VIDEO, ITS NICE TO GET A DIFFERENT PERSECTIVE. I DON'T SEE HOW SHE WAS BEING RACIST AT ALL, SHE MIGHT HAVE USED RACIST INSTEAD OF DISCRIMINATION OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I DON'T THINK THERE IS A PARTICULAR RACE THAT WEARS HEELS TO UNI. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK

  4. Just curious, what race of people at your uni only wear heels to school?

  5. Yeah Anon YOU dont think there is a particular race that wears heels to uni, but the girl in this video does. its these stupid little stereotypical comments that makes australia such a racist place.

  6. @alexandra: I don't think there is a "race" of people who wear heels to uni. everyone wears them to uni, even I wear them.

  7. Hi there, your friend is cute and does look good. However, that comment about heels is actually quite nasty. And it's not your readers "taking up the race issue", it's their response to something you have published that people find offensive. Also she's wearing pretty much head to toe chain store (Wittner, AA, Diva, Supre) which I have no problems with, but it really contradicts what she says about her 'style' and what she is critical of.

  8. I agree that some people just need to grow up. Turning something that probably wasn't said to taste into a racist comment was the job of a commenter not the girl in the video. Its time to get off your high horse and not think everything is about you. You say Australia is racist, well its people like you that turn nothing into something that KEEP Australia racist, you're the one pushing those racial barriers even further apart. If you want to do something about the racism problem then maybe the first step would be to not jump to conclusions based on race? You didn't even stop to think that if she had potentially said anything racist that they would have video edited it out. What was the point of your comment besides to stir up drama? You made such a big protest with your comments about never reading this blog yet you are still here.

  9. Hi, I just want to clarify that I am in no way a racist person, and my comment has been misconstrued as a malicious remark when it was not intended to be. I'm upset by some of these comments, I dont want there to be a backlash against Anya or her blog - I understand that everyone deserves their opinion, but my own opinion has nothing to do with her.
As for the "contradicating myself" bit, I dont know if you are saying it to spite me but seeing one outfit is not enough for you to judge my words as false. Today I wore nothing from a 'chain store' - if the video were taken today you would not be making that point. The point I was trying to make was that I value individuality and personal expression thoruhg fashion, rather than copying the mannequin in a 'chain store' window.

  10. Cute video! And don't worry about the whole racist thing... I'm sure you just used the wrong word under the pressure of viedoing! (maybe it should have been fashion-ist!).
    Love your blog. xoxo

  11. Hi Laura, I hope I didn't upset you, I'm sure you are not a racist person. However, EVERYONE is capable of making comments that are racist or mean, and should watch what assumptions they are making about people that they don't even know. My point about chain stores was not to spite you- but that you, of all people, should know that you can be an individual, look good, love fashion and still shop at wittner, AA, supre.. or even general pants.

  12. the race that they were talking about are the asians. Its true though, i dont get it either but asians always wear heels to uni (but then again they usually wear heels everywhere).
@ Cari yes! I wanted to point out the contradictory remark too!

@Laura, but no one wears head to toe sportsgirl or supre or topshop. Although I understand what you're saying... :)

  13. i was in australia for 4 months last year. i have visited france, england and new york
and i have to admit that astralia is the most racist country. and most of the white australians are hypocrites about it. i myself received nasty comments and nasty looks like what were i doing there.
melbourne is not too bad. sydney is worst than melbourne, in that not only are they more racist but more rude and not visitor friendly. and queensland. omg. never ever go to queensland if you're not a white person. thats all i can say. not jumping to conclusions here, but only concluding from what i've seen, heard and experienced.

  14. are you serious kate? I did an exchange in France last year and it is not only the most racist place in Europe, but also much more racist than Australia.

  15. Well I really loved this!

People are always going to be divided into categories based on their style, tastes and culture. This is not necessarily a racist division but one that happens in the real world regarding anything. I am really surprised that people have reacted so strongly to this and that so many of you think Australian's are racist.

I think your both great despite others opinions. Keep up the good work.

    xx

  16. To kate : well... Australia is definetely not the most racist country, of course there may be some discrimination as in all countries... I dont see whats wrong with queensland I've spent two months there in a australian family and I'm french and... black; I have not experienced any kind of racism there.

  17. there's nothing wrong with laura's comment. uni in australia is quite laid back, and in most cases (like my uni where it is quite hilly in places), wearing heels is completely unpractical and inappropriate. it's undeniable that a lot of international students from asia wear heels to uni (and im not talking kitten heels, i mean FULL ON HEELS) and it looks ridiculous. but it's probably part of their culture, or if they want to do it, that's fine. but i've attended 3 different uni's and it has been the case in all of them.

but she just pointed out something that is a reality in australia. the comment itself doesn't make it racist. i'm living in france at the moment, and it is more racist than australia.

love the blog by the way!
